The Duality At War: Spirit And Matter

December 2014 Channelling

I have just read Fiona MacCarthy’s biography of early 20th century artist Eric Gill. (A frank account of his life, where most of his earlier biographers were predisposed to skate over his peccadilloes.) Gill converted to Catholicism, proclaimed the religious life within his family of community, and produced beautiful religious art and typography. He also committed incest with his sisters and daughters – amongst other things. There was clearly and increasingly a distortion between the sacred and the profane.

Jihadists are committing atrocious acts for their religious beliefs – and the promise of virgins in Paradise. Catholic – and now Anglican – Priests have abused children in their care for decades, sure in the knowledge that their peers will cover up their addictions.

Spirit and Matter- the dualtiy of what it is to be human – gone mad.

Guidelines

“Annie’s novel ‘Shadowplay’ is a metaphor for the feminine descent into Matter, into the heart of darkness. This is a moment of crisis; and also, of course, a moment of opportunity. It is a real and honest time of down to earth change.

Throughout its history the earth has experienced the shedding of blood. It has seen the most appalling atrocities, many in the name of religion and faith. Demons have fought demons. There are demons that have lost – and been lost – in the bowels of the earth. (depicted in the paintings of Hieronymus Bosch and the allegorical writings of John Milton for example). And there are demons that have won. The Earth is full of demons.

Why is that?

Earth has a consciousness of its own. Deep down in the magma of time, the devil reigns, magma burns and moves and shifts. This is what the people have seen as the devil’s work; simply the burning fires of earth itself, deep down in the magma of history. And it has spooked mankind.

Myth is a metaphor for the human condition. Each human being carries within him or her, the blueprint of mankind – the entire history of the universe. When spirit fell to earth in the form of Lucifer the fallen angel, it fulfilled God’s plan that spirit should enter matter. The ‘sons of God’, as the bible says, mated with ‘the daughters of men’.

There is within man the imperative for spirit to penetrate matter. We are, as humans, a living metaphor, a living paradox; destined, ultimately, to integrate the two opposite poles of our being: light and dark, heaven and earth, day and night, spirit and matter. This is the human condition.

Man is essentially a spiritual being, and he carries this potential within him. He yearns to infuse deep down into the spirit of earth the nature of the Divine. He carries this yearning as his birthright.

Buried within the unconscious of humanity, are the memories, dreams and reflections of the personal and collective history of mankind. We are our evolutionary history, and since man walked out of the sea on to the land, we began to gather the self-reflective membrane that allowed us to begin to experience and understand our own evolution.

We are a mine of information, but before we earn the right to take the cosmic spark of spirit into matter, we need to clean up our act. We have to address the dark, instinctual, primal desires and drives that motor us from our own unconscious. We have to recognise and relinquish the secrets, the shame, the guilt, the hubris of the human condition.

Woman’s place is in the dark. It is a feminine journey, this descent into matter, and the reason why men of religion often disparage women. It is fear of the dark.

This is the most momentous of times. The rise of fundamentalism in all religions witnesses a compulsion by Spirit to penetrate Matter. This thrust, this urge of spirit is so powerful that those who are not prepared in consciousness fire up the darkness within, the very opposite of allowing light in. At its worst this urge to penetrate can mean an uncontrolled urge to violence, rape and incest.

We should know we are fighting our own demons – not those in the outside world. We cannot choose the pure light of spirit without first facing the darkness of our own matter. We must examine and cleanse the darkest corners before we can truly integrate spirit with matter and experience the loving kindness of soul consciousness. Only then can peace and harmony replace the rage and fear projected on to others.

Be part of the solution. Honour the feelings you have. Take time to reflect on your shame, or guilt or misunderstandings. Take a bath or shower and as the water drains out, see those feelings draining away. Or imagine yourself bathing beneath a waterfall. washing away those dark emotions. Cleanse the palate, metaphorically and literally. Drink lots of water. Feel attractive. Ask for forgiveness and forgive others. Live and let live.

The earth initiation is nearly completed.”
