Annie’s Notebook 1
WAKING UP TO OURSELVES
A regular review: for those who feel there’s something more
This month’s topic:
How the World is Changing
“The most significant change of this decade is the emerging idea that making money is less important than ethical living. This may sound far fetched but there is movement in the air – or, perhaps, a subterranean movement. Our attitude to what is important is changing – for ourselves firstly and then for planet earth – whether or not it seems likely on the surface.
The wobble that is happening in all things financial is affecting change, and those who are still gripped by the glamour of money are actually sinking into a stupour of anxiety.
Why should that be?
It is because the earth herself is wobbling. She too is anxious. It is as though the earth has become conscious of itself as a planet of Love and Healing ‘in the nick of time’, just as the energies of earth are changing.
The earth, since the beginning of time, has also been waking up. Her task was to offer evolving humanity the opportunity for growth and learning; to become aware of the cycles of time. Lifetime after lifetime we have been learning, growing, redeeming, in order to know consciously the full measure of our mighty past, present and future.
The earth, too, has been evolving in consciousness. And now is the moment of choice.
The earth is moving on to its next phase of evolution. It is moving away from the influence of the moon, of time and cycles, to become the partner of Venus. Earth is to become the planet of Beauty.
Earth is asking us to make the right choices now, to realise ourselves, and know consciously, intrinsically, and with integrity, that we are Love. Only then can we move on – with Earth – to become the holders of the essence of Beauty and Truth. Only then can we begin to understand the full measure of timeless wisdom”

What’s in a Voice?
The voice has a timbre that distinguishes you from anyone else. You know a voice immediately you hear it because it is like no one else’s voice. And yet the voice itself is just a larynx. The timbre is you. And the real you can be expressed as surely by the voice as it can through the eyes.
The real you, the deepest level of who you are, expressed through the voice, can become the signature of how people feel and respond within themselves.
It is the energy of who you are, expressed through your voice, that offers healing and change and allows people to grow.
This does not depend on the words you say or the brilliance with which you say them. No indeed. It is the timbre that expresses the depth of who you are and who you are becoming.
The better you are able to clear the depths of your being, the unconscious drives and negativities that prevent you truly wishing the best for others, the better you are able to offer the gift of clarity to others.
A voice that comes from a clear space within, whether through speech or singing, heals. A voice, however technically brilliant, that does not come from a place of clarity does not. You do not have to be perfect – intellectually, or musically – to offer something far more important than perfection.
What triggered the bigger picture for you and set you on your spiritual journey?
A wise person said many years ago that awareness of the spiritual journey was ‘caught not taught’. How true that felt. In my own experience a serendipitous reading by an astrologer affected me ‘like opening a trapdoor above my head’ and suddenly I began to ‘know things’. Led by this knowing I spent many years exploring every aspect of the alternative culture: psychology, healing, science, ecology, searching for a language to describe and explain my experience.
This is Barbara’s story. “More than 25 years ago a friend asked if I would provide overnight accommodation for a visiting superintendent of the Spiritualist church she attended. As a favour I agreed as I had no sympathy with this church’s practices. The visitor, a gentle and kind man, during supper told me about my deceased son, my pregnancy and labour, that he could not possibly have known from anyone. This unsettled me, but opened my mind to ‘something’.
Some years later I experienced a workshop on communication with other levels of consciousness and this time the energy was knowing, spiritual and pure. The introduction of the idea of ‘original wound’ relating to the five wounds of Christ, rather than ‘original sin’, resonated when I realised which wound related to me. This new energy gave me freedom, answered something in me that had always been a part of me since childhood and enabled me to explore a different dimension of my being. It has since become more of a reality, moving me forward, bringing loving kindness and a sense of timelessness, safety and security.
Although at times my faith in this incredible energy source – God – is tested I have no doubt that I am held lovingly. I know I will pursue this journey through whatever challenges and adventures lie ahead.”

Be the best you can be: a series of meditations
The Way to be Happy
Make a wish… Now settle into your seat and close your eyes. Begin to feel this wish settling into your heart rather than your head. Allow the wish to become comfortable in your heart, like a cat settling in a chair, relaxed and happy. Sigh into that wish without thinking about it. Feel how happy that wish makes you feel – or not.
Does that wish really fit comfortably in your heart, like a cat looks comfortable in its own skin? Begin to ask the wish how it really feels. Does it feel right or does it begin to make you feel, uncomfortable, anxious? If so, why is that?
Begin to feel that the wish is being realised – in your heart of hearts, not in your head. Trust that the wish is speaking to you, allowing you to feel a response to its efficacy. Does it feel a positive addition to the way your life is unfolding? In other words, is it, in all honesty, good for you?
Or, on the contrary, does the granting of this wish make you feel greedy or ungracious or unhappy, when you allow yourself to feel the changes the granting of this wish would actually make?
Allow your heart to help you understand yourself a little better. Is this really what you want to enhance your life? Does it suit you? Does it add to becoming the best you can be?
Or would you approach it another way? Or do you need to realign a little and change the things you wish for? Your heart knows.
Annie: When I first started working in this particular way, I worked at the College of Psychic Studies in London, one day a week for one year. I contributed an article to the College magazine ‘Light’ (Autumn 1995) and to my surprise – looking at it now seventeen years on – I see its title Waking Up to Ourselves is the same as I’ve given to this new column – it seems I’ve come full circle. If you are interested in seeing the article, which I feel is still valid today, click here.
